Surf Witch is a performance in which gender and demographic norms in the surfing culture of southern California are challenged. By performing solo or in small groups wearing the characterized symbol of witches, a black pointed hat, performers are displacing normative interactions in the water. This disruption draws attention to the absurdities of elitist hierarchies in surfing culture.
